Rank Abbreviation Description
Recruit Rct Recruits are new hopefuls who wish to join the detachment and become cadets. It normally takes three months to complete the recruit’s carder and becoming a cadet. You will not be classed as being part of the detachment until you pass the recruits phase of your training and are sworn into the detachment as a cadet.
Sapper Spr
Cadet Cdt Once a cadet you will hold the rank of sapper. Depending on what regiment you are badged this may very, as a member of the Corps of Royal Engineers you will be a sapper. Sapper is our regiment’s way of saying private.
Lance Corporal L/Cpl Lance Corporal also known as lance jack, is the first rank of becoming a Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO). It should take 2 to 3 years to achieve this rank and require you to complete a Junior cadet Instructors Carder (JCIC). As a Junior NCO/Probationary NCO your first chevron (Strip) will show that you have been seen to have leadership potential. This will also be your first real taste of authority and responsibility.
Corporal Cpl Corporal also known as full Corporal or full screw, are Junior NCOs/Established NCOs. With your second chevron you are an Established NCO, you have proven your leadership qualities and are now ready to take on more demanding responsibilities including being responsible for taking lessons.
Sergeant Sgt A Sergeant is a Senior NCO/Experienced NCO. To achieve this rank you would have had to complete the Senior Cadet Instructor Carder (SCIC). With three chevrons you will be an Experienced NCO responsible for delegating responsibilities to Junior NCOs organising activities and star carders.
Staff Sergeant S/Sgt Staff Sergeants are Senior NCOs/Highly Experienced NCOs. At this point you will have a large amount of responsibility within the detachment and some within the group (see sector structure)
Warrant Officer Class II WOII
(Company Sergeant Major) CSM As a Warrant Officer Class 2 otherwise known as a Company Sergeant Major you will have extensive responsibilities at both detachment and group level. At detachment level you will be responsible for the Senior NCOs, the smooth running of the detachment and other training activities. At group level your responsibilities will vary. You will also preferably have completed the Master Cadet Course.
Warrant Officer Class I WOI
(Regimental Sergeant Major) RSM As a Warrant Officer Class 1 otherwise known as a Regimental Sergeant Major you will have extensive responsibilities at detachment, group and sector level. At detachment level you will be responsible for the Senior NCOs, the smooth running of the detachment and other training activities. At group level your responsibilities will vary, as will your responsibilities at sector level.You must have Completed the Master Cadet Course.
Cadet Under Officer CUO Cadet Under Officer is a rank that is awarded under very special circumstances. The roll of the CUO is to put themselves outside of the cadet rank structure and see the system from the outside.
